Empowering English Language Learners
![]() The new school year is under way and it's been an exciting year so far. With a new class on "Exploring Comics through English and Graphic Novels," and a visiting practicum teacher from Saint Michael's College, Vermont, there's a lot going on. Also, I presented at my first conference in Japan, the Task-Based Learning in Asia International Conference in Osaka. I held a poster presentation outlining the Collaborative Learning in English and Engineering course I've been teaching for two years. I went over the goals of the course and tasks were used as scaffolding to help us reach those goals. It was the first conference put on by the TBL Sig of the Japanese Association of Language Teachers (JALT) and it was really fantastic. It was great to connect with other teachers around Japan and even some from Vietnam. It was clear through my interactions and that people are passionate about task-based learning and teaching and that there is potential to expand it's reach within Japanese education.
